Since it was granted its Royal Charter in 1883, the Royal Society of Canada has been Canada’s pre-eminent scholarly Academy. Its Fellowship has comprised more than 3000 outstanding scientists, humanists, and artists. The lives and research careers of the Fellows of the Royal Society are an ongoing testament to the scholarly curiosity, ingenuity and determination of Canadians.
For over one hundred years the obituaries of the Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada were published annually in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Canada. Collectively, these obituaries constitute a remarkably comprehensive intellectual history of Canada. They are at once a valuable record to families and descendants of deceased Fellows, an archive for subsequent generations of scholars, an institutional record for Canada’s universities and research establishments, and a portal into different eras of unique disciplinary trends and transformations. These obituaries help us understand, as Canadians, the scientific legacy we have inherited in the 21st century.
Recently, the Council of the Royal Society of Canada determined that this intellectual history of Canada ought to be made more accessible to the scholarly community, as well as to the public at large. Obituaries are therefore being published online on the website of the Royal Society – www.rsc-src.ca – beginning immediately. The systematic accumulation and publication of these obituaries has been undertaken with the leadership of the Honorary Secretary of the Society, Robert Major, and the Interim Honorary Editor of the Society, Professor Andrew Donskov of the University of Ottawa.
The initial objective of this project is to publish obituaries of the more than 300 Fellows of the Society who have passed away during the past decade. After this updating has been completed, we intend to add to this archive by making the entire series of Transactions of the Royal Society available online. Within the next five years, therefore, Canadians – and anyone anywhere using the internet – will have access to a searchable database consisting of the Obituaries of every Fellow of the Society from 1883 through to the present.
In this way we seek to honour the legacy of the Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, and to ensure that the record of their accomplishments stands as an inspiration for those who today follow in their scholarly footsteps.
